Ashley was able to sit up long enough to meet our daughter this morning, three days after she was born. I struggle to describe the moment. I'll never forget it.
We went to see Maddie again tonight and she was very active - arms flailing and legs kicking. We're told she'll be moved to an incubator tonight. In a few days, they'll be able to remove the protective covering over her head so that we can fully appreciate her.
Ash is being discharged in the morning. She's still very weak and struggles to stand for very long, but they think she's well enough to recover at home. She'll appreciate being back in her own bed, but it will be difficult to leave Maddie behind at the hospital.
The NICU is fabulous. One of the NICU nurses called this morning to see how we weathered the night. It was her day off, but she wanted to check on us. We're overwhelmed by the quality of the staff at Seton. It's truly a top notch facility.
Your prayers are as good as gold to us right now. Please continue to lift up our family and pray for perspective and patience for Ashley and I and continued growth for Maddie.
I'm confused. I thought Maddie was already in an incubator? Was she in one and then had to leave it and now will be going back to one?
ReplyDeleteThat photo is unbelievable... I can feel the emotion... the "eagerness" of Ashley pearing over the edge of the box. I can definitely understand the struggle to describe that moment. So happy that you are all doing well. Continued prayers...
ReplyDeleteI couldn't resist correcting my spelling for peering. Christine and I got to take a tour of our maternity ward this morning and got to see a few newborns in the nursery... thinking of you guys.
ReplyDeleteByron noted in an earlier blog that a particular nurse was an "all star." We been blessed with several all stars, but the Michael Jordan of all of this, the MVP, goes to Ash. I have flashbacks to when the new mom was the newborn-arriving scratched up, forceps marked, cone-headed. Perhaps her own difficult birth toughened her for she has shown resilience, courage, inner strength, character and patience. And she has never loss that Ashley smile that never fails to warm the heart of her father. She is going to be a great mom. Proud of you, my girl.

Howdy Byron,
ReplyDeleteMy mom just passed along word of what is going on. I'm glad to see things are looking good. The circumstances are different, but I understand the fears and uncertainties of having a child in the hospital. If you want someone to talk to, let me know. We are keeping the three of you in our prayers.
Take advantage of any rest you can. You will get very little for the next few years...
